Add Drivers and Set Seats

Drivers are the parents doing the driving for a trip. This article covers signing up to drive, setting your seats, filling cars, and driving on a repeating schedule.

Open the ride screen

  1. Tap an event on your dashboard or in a carpool.
  2. The ride screen opens with two tabs:
    • To (green) for rides to the event.
    • From (blue) for rides home from the event.
  3. The Drivers row shows who's driving. A check means they're driving that direction; a crossed-out picture means they're not.

Sign up a driver

  1. In the Drivers row, tap +. Kid Hop asks you to sign in if you haven't.
  2. Pick a driver from the list, or tap Invite a Driver to add a new one (see How to Share Your Carpool and Invite Other Parents).
  3. Tap a driver's picture to open their card.

Inside a driver's card:

  • Driving this trip turns driving on for the current direction (To or From). Turn it on in each tab if they drive both ways.
  • Only the carpool owner, an administrator, or that driver can change someone's Driving this trip setting.

Set your seats

Seats are how many riders you can carry on a trip.

  1. Open your own driver card. You can only change your own seats.
  2. Make sure Driving this trip is on for that direction.
  3. Set your Seats (0 to 10).

Other drivers' seats are shown but can't be changed.

What seats mean

  • Seats are your capacity for that ride, so 3 seats means up to 3 riders.
  • When you change seats on a ride, that number also becomes your default for future trips, so you only set it once.
  • The badge on a driver's picture shows riders / seats and is colour-coded:
    • Green: no riders yet.
    • Orange: some seats filled, with room to spare.
    • Red: full.
    • Dark red: more riders than seats, so move someone or add a seat.

Fill the cars

Under every driver who is driving that direction, the ride screen shows one circle per seat. A filled circle is a rider in that car, and an empty circle is a free seat.

  • Tap an empty seat under a driver and pick the rider to put them in that car.
  • Or open the driver's card, tap Select Riders, and choose riders for that car. You can't go over the seat limit; a full car shows Full.

You can also choose the car from the rider's side (see Add Riders, Set Pickup & Drop-off, and Skip a Trip).

When there's only one driver

If just one driver is driving a direction that day and everyone fits, every rider rides with them, so there's no car to choose. If there are more riders than seats, nobody is seated automatically: the riders show as Needs a ride, and you choose who gets the seats or find a second driver.

Plan many days at once

Use the Ride Organizer to plan ahead:

  1. Open your carpool and tap Organizer, or on the ride screen tap ⋮ and then Ride Organizer.
  2. Pick a date range: 2 weeks, 1 month, 3 months or Custom.
  3. On any day's card, tap ⋮ and then Edit Drivers to choose the To and From drivers.
  4. A day that still needs a driver shows No drivers.

How to drive on a repeating schedule

If you're available to drive the same trip every week, set those days once instead of signing up day by day. This is how you tell your carpool which days you can drive. Schedules work for repeating events (Daily, Weekly or Monthly), not one-time events.

  1. Open your carpool and tap Organizer, or on the ride screen tap ⋮ and then Ride Organizer.
  2. Tap Repeating schedules.
  3. If Kid Hop asks you to Choose an event, pick the event.
  4. Tap Add repeating schedule.
  5. Choose the Driver.
  6. Under Which trips?, pick To, From, or both.
  7. Under Which days?, keep Every occurrence or pick the weekdays you drive. Only days when the event takes place are included.
  8. Under Which weeks?, keep Every week, or pick Even weeks or Odd weeks when two parents take turns. The preview lists the next dates so you can check.
  9. Under When?, set Starts and Until. A schedule can cover up to 12 months.
  10. Check how many rides it adds, then tap Save schedule. Each direction counts as one ride, so a round trip is two.

Shortcut: in the Ride Organizer, press and hold a driver's car on any day to open the form for that driver and trip.

What to expect:

  • Kid Hop adds a ride for every matching day right away, so the Organizer and your dashboard show it.
  • Days that already have a driver set are left as they were.
  • Cars that come from a schedule show a small repeat icon.
  • You can still change any single day by hand, and that change is kept if the schedule is edited or stopped.
  • Edits only change upcoming rides that haven't started; past rides stay as they are.

Change or stop a schedule

  1. In the Ride Organizer, tap Repeating schedules and pick the event.
  2. Tap the schedule to edit it, make your changes, and tap Save changes.
  3. To end it, tap Stop repeating. Kid Hop asks "Stop repeating?" and shows how many upcoming rides it removes; tap Stop repeating again to confirm.

Who can do what

Every parent who joins a carpool is a member and can help manage its schedule. The carpool owner can share the rest with administrators: open the members list, tap ⋮ on a parent's card and choose Make Administrator (or Remove Administrator later).

Troubleshooting

  • "Create a repeating event to set up driver schedules.": The carpool has only one-time events. Change the event's Recurrence to Daily, Weekly or Monthly first (see How To: Create and Edit an Event).
  • "No drivers in this carpool yet.": Invite another parent or sign yourself up to drive first.
  • "Select at least one weekday or choose Every occurrence.": Pick a day under Which days?.
  • "Select at least one direction.": Pick To, From, or both under Which trips?.
  • "The end date must be after the start date.": Move Until after Starts.
  • "This event has already ended.": The event's end date has passed, so there are no days left to schedule.
  • "... already drives this leg on some of those days.": That driver has another schedule on the same days. Tap Edit existing schedule to change that one instead.
  • "Could not check upcoming rides. Try again before saving.": Tap Try again.
  • "The schedule could not be saved. Please try again.": Check that you're online and save again.

Tips

  • Set your seats once; they carry forward as your default.
  • Dark red on a badge means a car is over capacity.
  • One driver covers everyone who fits; add a second driver only when one car isn't enough.
