Rewards & Settlements

This guide explains how the reward and settlement system works so you can motivate your kids and manage their earnings.

Overview

This guide covers households that have rewards enabled. Chore Boss supports two reward modes — choose one per household:

Mode How It Works
Allowance Kids earn real money (e.g., $0.50 per chore) deposited into a virtual piggy bank
Points Kids earn points they can redeem for custom rewards you define (e.g., 100 pts = Movie Night)

You can switch between modes in Settings > Home Settings > Reward Type.

Setting Up Rewards on a Chore

When creating or editing a chore, the reward section lets you configure:

1. Reward Amount

  • Allowance mode : Enter a dollar amount (e.g., $2.00)
  • Points mode : Enter points (e.g., 10 pts)

2. Reward Accrual (When They Earn)

Accrual Best For How It Works
Per Completion One-time or as-needed chores Full reward is earned every time the chore is completed
Weekly Daily or recurring chores The reward amount is the total for the week, split across completions

Example — Weekly accrual: If you set a daily chore to earn 7.00/week,yourchildearns1.00 each day they complete it ($7.00 / 7 days).

Example — Per Completion accrual: If you set a chore to earn 2.00percompletion,yourchildearns2.00 every single time they complete it.

How Kids Earn Rewards

  1. A chore appears on the home screen when it's due
  2. The child taps the chore and marks each task as complete
  3. If photo verification is required, they upload a photo
  4. Once all tasks are done, a reward is automatically created and added to their balance

The reward amount depends on the accrual type:

  • Per completion : Full configured amount
  • Weekly : A proportional fraction of the weekly total

Viewing Balances

The Rewards tab (piggy bank icon) shows all family members and their current balance:

  • Allowance mode : Shows the dollar amount (e.g., $12.50)
  • Points mode : Shows points total (e.g., 85 pts)

Tap a family member to see their:

  • Current balance — total earnings minus settlements
  • Recent earnings — a history of rewards earned from chore completions, each showing the chore name, tasks, date, and amount earned

Settling Balances (Paying Out)

Settlement is how you "cash out" a child's balance — acknowledging that you've paid their allowance or fulfilled a reward.

Settling an Allowance

  1. Go to Rewards tab
  2. Tap the child's name
  3. Tap the Settle Balance button
  4. Review their current balance
  5. Optionally add an adjustment (+ or - amount) for bonuses or deductions
  6. Add an optional note (e.g., "Paid via piggy bank")
  7. Confirm the settlement

After settling, the child's earned balance goes to $0.00. The adjustment modifies the payout amount (what you owe the child), not the ledger balance — a +$1.00 bonus means you pay more, a -$0.50 deduction means you pay less, but the balance is cleared either way.

Redeeming Points for Custom Rewards

  1. Go to Rewards tab
  2. Tap the child's name
  3. Tap the Settle Balance button
  4. Select the custom reward they want to redeem
  5. If they don't have enough points, you can add bonus points as an adjustment
  6. Review the summary (current balance, reward cost, final balance)
  7. Confirm the redemption

The reward's point cost is deducted from their balance.

Custom Rewards (Points Mode Only)

Custom rewards are prizes kids can work towards. Access them from the gift icon on the Rewards tab.

Field Description
Name What the reward is (e.g., "Movie Night", "New Game")
Points Price How many points it costs to redeem
Renewable Whether the reward can be redeemed more than once
Note Optional description
Avatar Optional image

Settlement History

Tap the balance card on a child's reward detail screen to view their full settlement history. Each entry shows:

  • Settlement date and time
  • Who settled it (which parent/admin)
  • The amount or points settled
  • Any adjustments applied
  • Whether a custom reward was redeemed
  • An optional note

Key Concepts

Balance Calculation

Allowance Balance = Total Rewards Earned − Total Settlements
Points Balance = Total Points Earned + Adjustment Points − Settled Points

Adjustments

When settling, you can adjust the payout amount. The adjustment changes what you owe — the earned balance is always fully cleared:

  • Positive adjustment : Pay a bonus on top of earnings (e.g., +$1.00 for extra effort, or +10 pts)
  • Negative adjustment : Deduct from the payout (e.g., −$0.50 for missed chores or behavior)

Who Can Settle?

Only parent/admin profiles (household managers) can settle balances. Kids with limited access can view their balance but cannot settle. You can manage household managers by going to Settings > My Homes > Select a Home > Select a User and edit.

Tips

  • Start simple : Use "Per Completion" accrual for younger kids — it's easier to understand
  • Weekly accrual for routine chores : Great for daily chores where you want a fixed weekly budget
  • Review regularly : Check the Rewards tab weekly and settle balances so kids stay motivated
  • Use notes : Add notes when settling to help track payments (e.g., "Paid cash", "Added to savings jar")
  • Custom rewards drive engagement : In points mode, create rewards your kids actually want — it keeps them motivated to complete chores
